    • Challenges: Can be impatient, impulsive, and insensitive.
    • Ideal Environment: Fast-paced, challenging environments where they can take charge and achieve results.

    • Challenges: Can be indecisive, resistant to change, and avoid conflict.
    • Ideal Environment: Stable, predictable environments where they can work in harmony with others.
  4. Calculator

    • Challenges: Can be overly critical, perfectionistic, and inflexible.

  • Improve communication: Tailor your approach to different personality types.
  • Enhance teamwork: Recognize and leverage the strengths of your colleagues.
  • Increase self-awareness: Gain a deeper understanding of your own motivations and behaviors.

Working Style

He/She is a direct and forceful person who enjoys challenge and variety in a job, particularly if they are of a technical type for which she has some experience. At first he/she can be somewhat suspicious and sceptical of other people’s ideas. He/She is unlikely to trust people easily when he/she first meets them, but can be a concerned and loyal colleague. He/She has a great deal of creative work energy and has self starting ability. He/She does, however, need to know what his/her responsibilities are and what is required by the task. Once these areas have been broadly defined, he/she likes nothing better than to be left alone to get on with things.

He/She has high standards and has little trouble making tough decisions, provided he/she has all the facts to support the choices. He/She reacts quickly and has the ability to hold current information and think on his/her feet. He/She is an extremely energetic individual who sometimes needs to work on his/her patience and follow up skills. He/She can be seen by others as somewhat cool and lacking in understanding, he/she does however have a sensitive side. He/She is not generally a motivator of others and may lose patience with people who require constant praise.

While he/she can apply his/herself to detail, it is important to bear in mind that such detail should be varied and not of a routine or repetitive nature or his/her creativity may be lost. He/She has a tendency to get bored. He/She will always fight for his/her ideas and objectives.

He/She is oriented towards things rather than people and may be better suited to topics which require technical ability and research. There is a tendency for him/her to be somewhat over-critical of others. He/She is not always very sociable and may be sometimes serious and intense. He/She can work as a group member, but may prefer not to be constrained by having to deal with too many people. He/She may have little tolerance for people who are not committed to the current task. He/She has a tendency to apply proven fact and past precedent to new problems.

It should be remembered that this individual has an innate tendency towards independent creativity. While this person works within the rules and procedures, there is a tendency to avoid working in large groups. He/She tends to be a perfectionist and may blank those who fail to meet his/her standards

He/She is naturally creative and analytical in approach; he/she is therefore motivated to learn by accomplishments, results and his/her need to know why.

Reassurance, the absence of sudden or abrupt changes, coupled with clear
he/she’s likely learning style needs the opportunity to see the big picture, to feel intellectually stretched and to gain practical advantage from learning.

What he/she has to offer

He/She is a naturally detailed and creative person who likes to be in control of a situation. He/She will research subjects of interest and will usually have lots of projects on the go at once.

Positive study skills are his/her flair and creativity with the innate ability to tackle complex problems.Areas to develop with the tutor could include personal reflection time and listening to, or working with, others.

One practical exercise which often proves useful is to identify one occasion when he/she was in a group which worked particularly well, then to establish what it was that made the group successful.

The values that he/she is most capable of contributing to any organisation lie in the areas of creating and enforcing standards, systems and quality controls. This creative individual is likely to have above average abilities in appraising people and their performance in a most objective and diplomatic manner. In addition, people with this behavioural style bring with them the willingness to challenge established practices and procedures and to solve problems by experimenting with new ideas.

Ultimate career path and success could easily involve the qualities of creative control in a technical environment as these are he/she’s great strengths.

He/She is normally highly tactful. There are indicators that he/she has a good sense of timing. He/She does not seek the limelight but is able to direct others of similar interests and is extremely focused. He/She is painstaking in his work and prefers meaningful tasks that require accuracy. He/She may prefer to work alone, as an independent contributor to a group. He/She likes to get things right and can create elegant solutions. Being probing and factual, he/she prefers a quiet environment where he/she can concentrate. He/She may not always share information. He/She prefers to justify his information with facts and figures. He/She may be defensive when challenged and can appear rigid because of his/her need to do things correctly.

Colin’s ideal tutor/trainer will be a technical expert who realises that challenging and exact assignments should be given, preferably confirmed in writing.

  • Learning Pattern

He/She shows a strong correlation between his/her Calculator working style and his/her Analytical approach to learning and tasks in general. This suggests that he/she will react positively to analytical reviewing, exercises that have an ‘exact’ answer and e-learning. He/She is likely to appreciate the opportunity to drill down into the data and check facts out for him/herself.

Make sure that he/she is intellectually stretched by working with people who ask searching and serious questions. He/She will be easily engaged by interesting ideas and concepts.

Areas to develop include working with others and stress management. Although he/she has a questioning approach and good organisational skills, he/she should remember to consciously relax and give him/herself the occasional break.

If he/she is struggling with the negative impact of mistakes, trying to look upon them as opportunities to learn would be a useful strategy.
